Through prayer and service, we transform simple plastic bags into warm, waterproof sleeping mats—offering comfort, hope, and renewed dignity to people experiencing homelessness throughout our region.
We’re a small group at Church of the Highlands, crocheting sleeping mats from plastic bags. Every week we gather, hands busy and hearts full, transforming something disposable into something
life-giving.
The finished mat provides a warm, waterproof place to rest for someone sleeping outdoors, offering both comfort and dignity while also serving as a protective barrier against
rain and wind.
What We Do
- Collect donated plastic grocery bags from the community
- Cut and loop bags into strips of yarn (called plarn)
- Crochet the plarn into warm waterproof sleeping mats
- Donate finished mats to local homeless shelters and outreach programs
- Our main group meets locally through our Grants Mill Campus, but satellite groups now gather in living rooms, church basements, and community centers across the region. Contact us to find a location near you.

Our Story
One group.

We started as a handful of people at the Grants Mill Campus, learning to turn discarded bags into something that keeps a person dry through the night. What began small has grown into one group gathering in many places, sharing one purpose.
Every mat is an act of prayer, a tangible expression of faith, service, and love for our neighbors. We believe small, faithful acts can restore dignity and bring hope to those who need it most.

No crocheting experience needed — just a willing heart! We meet weekly and provide everything you need to start making a difference right away.
